What began as a tactical rivalry has become a full-scale economic conflict. Each side is seeking to discredit the other by leaking evidence of sanction-evasion tactics to Western regulators and journalists — a form of “weaponised transparency” that has already forced several shipping networks out of operation. The result is a market in disarray: fewer vessels, higher freight premiums, and mounting uncertainty for importers who depend on these cargoes.

The losses for the producer are already steep — industry sources estimate billions of dollars in lost revenue and sharply higher logistics costs. Yet the more consequential damage may lie thousands of miles away, in Brazil.
